Circe

Circe by Madeline Miller gives the mythological witch her own narrative, beginning with her place in the household of Helios, the sun god. Unlike her powerful father, Circe does not seem to possess the gifts that her divine family values. The discovery of witchcraft changes her possibilities and brings punishment: she is banished to Aiaia, where she develops a life beyond the household that rejected her.

Circe by Madeline Miller: exile on Aiaia

The island gives Circe distance from her family and room to practise her craft. Herbs, spells and animals become part of her daily work, turning isolation into a setting for acquired skill. Her power is something she learns to use, which gives the story a different rhythm from a simple account of an immortal inheriting unquestioned strength.

Exile does not mean permanent freedom from interference. Visitors bring the wider mythological world to her shore, including Odysseus, whose arrival draws love and risk into the life she has made. The island remains a central space, but its boundaries cannot keep out desire, obligation or the consequences of other people’s actions. Solitude and connection become equally complicated possibilities.

Miller follows Circe as daughter, outsider, witch and lover, allowing these identities to develop across a long life. Family conflict gives the narrative an early pressure that continues to matter even at a distance. The contrast between divine power and lived vulnerability makes her a character with emotional stakes, rather than a fixed obstacle encountered in someone else’s heroic journey.

A mythological novel about power and self-definition

The retelling invites readers to reconsider what changes when the narrative belongs to a woman familiar from another character’s adventures. Events acquire a different scale when her labour, fear and longing remain in view. The attraction lies in the sustained perspective: Circe is present before famous visitors arrive and continues to have a life beyond their immediate needs.

Readers interested in character-centred myth can explore how isolation creates both constraint and possibility. Aiaia offers space to become capable, but capability does not make every relationship safe. The novel also gives reading groups questions about family authority, the treatment of outsiders and the difficulty of forming an identity when the surrounding world has already assigned a meaning to one’s power.
