Letters of Enchantment Book2: Ruthless Vows [Paperback]

Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross concludes the Letters of Enchantment duology begun in Divine Rivals. This English paperback returns to Iris Winnow and Roman Kitt after war has separated them. Their enchanted correspondence becomes important again, but Roman’s lost memories and the demands of a powerful god make the renewed connection much more dangerous.

Ruthless Vows: Iris and Roman on opposite sides of the war

Iris has returned from the front injured and heartbroken. Roman is missing, while the city of Oath remains insufficiently prepared for the conflict approaching it. The distance between public understanding and the realities of war gives her reporting an urgent purpose. Information matters when people still prefer to believe that the danger will remain somewhere else.

With fellow journalist Attie, Iris accepts another opportunity to follow Dacre’s movements. Returning west means leaving the apparent safety of home and confronting the events that separated her from Roman. The decision combines professional duty with personal hope, without allowing either motive to remove the risk of travelling towards an advancing conflict.

Roman has awakened in Dacre’s realm without the memories that would explain who he is or whom he loves. Reassured that his past will return, he begins writing for the god who healed him. His talent now serves a cause he cannot fully assess. When a letter appears beneath his wardrobe door, suspicion gradually becomes curiosity about its unknown sender.

The renewed letters create a relationship between present trust and forgotten experience. Iris knows what Roman has lost, while Roman must decide how to respond without possessing that same knowledge. Their bond cannot simply resume as though the separation were a delay. It must survive changed circumstances in which words can reveal truth, conceal intention or become a reason for betrayal.

Enchanted letters, lost memory and the ethics of wartime reporting

The novel brings its romance together with questions about testimony and allegiance. A journalist’s ability to shape a convincing account becomes especially consequential when a god wants that account to serve his power. Roman’s uncertain position and Iris’s reporting give the narrative two approaches to the same problem: how to recognise truth when fear and authority determine what people are encouraged to believe.

This paperback is for readers continuing after Divine Rivals; it completes that central two-book story. It suits those who enjoy romantic fantasy in which private feeling remains connected to a larger public crisis. The attraction lies in the possibility that communication can preserve a bond without making its outcome inevitable, requiring Iris and Roman to choose one another while also deciding what they are willing to risk for a different future.
