The Everlasting [Hardback]

The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow brings a celebrated lady-knight together with a historian who has spent his life admiring her story. Sir Una Everlasting died for Dominion, and her legend helped give the nation its sense of itself. Centuries later, Owen Mallory discovers that entering the past does not simply reveal the truth: he has been sent to ensure the familiar account happens again.

The Everlasting: Sir Una and the historian inside her legend

Una’s memory survives in songs, children’s books and recruiting posters. Those public versions give her a clear place in the national imagination while leaving her actual life difficult to see. Owen, a failed soldier and struggling scholar, has attached his own hopes to the tale. The distance between the historical person and her usefulness as a symbol becomes central to their meeting.

His pursuit takes him through warfare and archives before bringing him into Una’s time. The shift turns research into involvement. Someone who might once have treated the end of a legend as a fixed fact now has to confront its human cost, while his assigned task depends on preserving that ending. Knowing a story and being responsible for its repetition become very different experiences.

Una and Owen are caught together in time, required to retell the same narrative despite what it demands of them. Their relationship creates a conflict between the account a nation expects and the lives of the people forced to enact it. To seek a different conclusion, they must challenge the history that gives the legend its authority, placing personal change beside a much larger act of revision.

Alix E. Harrow on history, mythmaking and love

The premise makes storytelling a form of power. A heroic death can be made meaningful to people who never knew the person involved, yet that public meaning may depend on ignoring what she wanted. Readers interested in historical fantasy can consider how a familiar narrative becomes difficult to question precisely because so many identities and institutions have been built around it.

Owen’s admiration adds another layer. Loving a heroic story is not automatically the same as understanding its heroine. The novel gives the romantic relationship a demanding question: can affection survive the loss of the idealised image that first made it possible? The time-bound structure brings that issue into action, since a change in understanding may require refusing to repeat an expected event.
