The Godfather

Mario Puzo’s The Godfather enters the criminal world of the Corleone family in the 1940s. Don Vito Corleone has built an extensive network of power, favours and fear, but his position cannot last indefinitely. As enemies recognise an opportunity, his sons face the problem of maintaining the family’s authority. This is a crime novel in which inheritance means accepting obligations that may transform the person who inherits.

The Godfather and the Corleone family

Vito’s influence reaches beyond the people directly involved in criminal activity. Blackmail, violence and negotiation connect his family to a much larger social world. Puzo makes those connections central to the story: power depends not only on who can threaten another person, but on who can obtain a favour, enforce a debt or make someone believe that protection is necessary.

The question of succession exposes differences within the family. Sonny is already familiar with its operations. Michael, a veteran of the Second World War, is reluctant to enter the business and lacks his brother’s experience of that world. Their contrasting relationships with their father’s authority give the struggle a personal dimension. The family needs continuity, but continuity demands choices from individuals with different expectations.

Mario Puzo on succession and power

Outside pressure makes those choices urgent. Rival crime lords and the police see weakness as Vito grows older, leaving the Corleones to defend themselves on more than one front. The danger is not confined to a single opponent who can simply be removed. Survival requires judgment about competing threats, the use of loyalty and the possibility that an apparent success will create another vulnerability.

The title names a role as much as a man. A godfather commands respect through family language while controlling a violent enterprise, and the novel continually brings those meanings into contact. Affection and intimidation can occupy the same conversation. The demands of kinship become difficult to separate from the demands of the organisation, making private relationships part of the machinery of public power.

A crime novel in English paperback

Readers interested in family sagas, organised crime and the moral costs of ambition will find a sustained narrative here. The novel offers space to consider how a system reproduces itself through the next generation, including people who might once have imagined a different life. Its appeal lies partly in that tension between the desire to protect one’s family and the actions undertaken in its name.
